Explanatory Notes

Thai is transliterated according to a simplified version of the system devised by the Royal Thai Academy.

Repeated citations in the footnotes of individual sources are given as a short form of the full citation (e.g. McGilvary, Half Century, 100). For the sake of clarity, however, certain primary materials are always given their full citation, even if they have been cited previously (e.g. McGilvary, undated letter in FM 28, 3(August 1869): 59.).

After their first citation in the footnotes, journals are abbreviated (e.g. FM for Foreign Missionary). A full list of these abbreviations is found below as well as at the beginning of the Bibliography.
